THEME

1. Natural World
All living things have a life cycle. After a sensational display of colour and form, flowers lose their petals and seed heads begin to form. In the photograph 'Single Oriental Poppy' by Irving Penn the last two petals are about to drop. Is something more beautiful at the beginning of its life or at the end?

2. Objects
Objects can be used to symbolise life stories from the beginning to the end. a still life artwork which includes various symbolic objects designed to remind the viewer of their mortality and the worthlessness of worldly goods and pleasures could encourage you to think about objects that are precious to you.

still life photos

Write about how you have experimented with slow shutter speeds to create eerie blurring. What effect does this have? what could a blurry skull symbolise?

momento mori

Memento mori (Latin: "remember (that) you will die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality

skull photos

I have taken a series of skull photos in black and white. I have used a low vantage point because...
the skull is upside down because it is composed differently to the person. i also wanted the person in the picture as it gives the viewer something else to look at. the human in the picture  could be seen as a metaphorical contrast to the skull

Photoshop edits

above i have edited my photos to combine the skull with the Stig helmet.

Vanitas -homework

In these photos are the objects that belong to me that are important to me.

The Coin

This coin is a bitcoin.
I have experimented with photographing my coin in many ways
such as putting the the bitcoin in the tree, i did this because it is an unexpected place for a coin  to be

Macro

Macro photography, is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects.

I have experimented with reverse lens photography with my Canon. This creates a MACRO effect meaning i can get a  very close and detailed image.

Coin experiments

plain background
black and white
layered 2 images
symmetrical image

i decided to shot on darker backgrounds because it contrasts well with the lighter colour of the coin

WWW: i like how he skull is still identifiable and the other objects are completely ambiguous.

EBI: I will now experiment with slower shutter speeds and my coins

Editing my Skull mid term

I have added a 'vignette' to make....

My Meaning explained...

My project is about...
'Money makes the world go round'. Does being rich make you happy? What is the value of a penny?

My Source images...

the spinning coin image shows a coin in different positions at once. I particularly like the texture of the grooves on the edge.

Money is on the minds of the rich, poor and everybody in the middle and so I find it an interesting subject. Its allure usually has dark undertones but that’s not what interests me.
In my pictures I like concentrating on the elemental fact that money is paper and metal. While it’s hard to separate money’s physical properties from what it symbolically represents, I have tried to make its “thingness” be important. Money as a plaything is also an aspect that figures in this work.

experiments...

Painting around my photos
Layering my images onto coin templates in Photoshop
Adding circular text around my photos
Picture
Here i have experimented with a source image of a coin and combined it with one of my skull photographs

Vanitas - Vanity  - Money - Essential or Luxury?

'Money makes the world go round'
'as good as gold'
'at any cost'
'as bold as brass'
'bad penny'
'black market'

  • Money is no object
  • Money is power
  • Money is the root of all evil
  • Money isn't everything

in these pictures i experimented with notes instead of coins.

in the above pictures i take macro images of coins, i do this to see the all the textures of the coin

these are some macro pictures i took of some american dollars

these are some of my favourite pictures of macro coins i have ever taken.
